Academic Instructor/Mentor

DMDL provides ESSA Title I supplemental instructional services to Private Schools located in the Chicago School District attendance area. These services include direct instruction, interventional tutoring, academic counseling, and fine arts. DMDL is seeking to hire Academic Instruction specialists for these schools.

Direct Instruction

Using a direct instructional approach that connects the inherent elements of music to elements of reading and math, the DMDL curriculum helps students improve perceptive listening, critical thinking and creative participation skills. The DMDL interactive curriculum is systematic and empirical. Comprised of 9 units delivered in 28 class sessions it is based on best practices, state standards and common core, scientific research, theories of multiple intelligence research and research on arts integration. This program teaches and reinforces skills necessary for reading, language arts and math proficiency. Lessons focus on skills such as reading comprehension, fluency and mathematical problem solving. DMDL methodology embraces the concept that students discover themselves during the process of listening to and making music. The DMDL curriculum is structured yet designed to compliment and support lessons taught in student’s regular classroom.

DMDL service providers, using a mentoring approach, motivate and encourage students to pursue excellence in all areas of concentration. Service providers are highly qualified and properly trained to integrate themselves into the school culture, thereby, leading students on a path to self – discovery. This position requires at least a Bachelor’s degree in Music, Education or related field and relevant work experience. Classroom teaching and/or private instruction experience is preferred. This position requires a contracted commitment for 28 weeks; from September through May (summer positions may also be available). Criminal background checks will be conducted on all candidates. Selected candidates will also be required to attend all scheduled trainings and professional development meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Use provided evaluation tools, observations and conversation with teachers, principals and parents to determine the academic strengths and/or deficiencies of each student
  •  Learn and operate with the DMDL instructional strategies
  •  Utilize creative instructional methods that compliment each child’s learning modality
  •  Instruct small groups of students (up to 15)
  •  Attend ongoing training/support meetings with DMDL staff (approx every 6-8 weeks)
  •  Work closely with the DMDL school team to help create a cohesive learning experience for students
  •  Maintain detailed documentation and appropriate paperwork
  •  Communicate with regular classroom teachers and school principal regarding progress of students

The individual accepting this position must be creative, compassionate towards children, possess a firm belief that all students can learn, and have a detail-oriented work style. Candidates shall possess good relationship building skills, as well as the desire and ability to motivate, mentor and encourage students.
