Tsukasa Taiko

Under the direction of prominent musician Tatsu Aoki, “Tsukasa Taiko” is one of the leading Taiko (Japanese drumming) programs in the Midwest. “Tsukasa Taiko’s” mission is to preserve and pass on the traditional concepts of Taiko as a cultural legacy and to utilize these concepts in expanding and evolving the Taiko form. Dedicated to strengthening the Chicago Japanese American/Asian American communities and being a leader in the Taiko drumming culture of the Midwest, “Tsukasa Taiko” maintains an international profile by performing around the world throughout the year while remaining an active, positive presence in the metropolitan Chicago area.

Chicago Sound and the Japanese-American Cultural Legacy:
Presentation of Chicago Jazz/Blues/Creative Music and Japanese Culture

Chicago Sound and the Japanese-American Cultural Legacy will include both Japanese traditional performers and local African American jazz specialists, bringing the cultural history distinct to the Chicago Southside to Chicago area schools. The performance numbers and explanations demonstrate the importance of cultural crossover, highlighting the Japanese traditional aesthetics and Chicago jazz motifs. The presentations will be more accessible to many of the students as local African American Chicago jazz artists work together with Tsukasa Taiko drummers, traditional Japanese dancers and Asian American jazz artists.
